Qwest's history is:
- 1988, Southern Pacific Telecom was established as a subsidiary of Southern Pacific Raildroad to lay telecom cable.
- 1991, The company began offering limited long distance services.
- 1995, The company changed its name to Qwest Communications.
- 1997, The company Incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware and began construction of its nationwide fiber optic network.
- June 1997, The company became publicly owned with its successful intial public offering (IPO.)
As of December 31, 2009, Qwest employed 30,138 people.
Qwest Common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker "Q".
