Communications Solutions
CENTREX/CENTRON® family of services
The CENTREX family of services are a Central Office based product that allows your school to grow without continually replacing outdated equipment. Sometimes products are differentiated for what they do not do. No space is required on site for voice communications switching equipment. No complicated system is needed to manage and/or maintain the system. CENTREX will pull the communications systems together for both the students and the school. The system is tailored to the individual needs of the schools and will fit their needs both today and tomorrow. CENTREX service will never grow obsolete.
Qwest Remote Access Services (RAS)
Qwest Remote Access Services (RAS) is a complete business remote access solution that enables a school to outsource the burden, complexity and risk of managing their intranet system. Remote Access Services is designed to enable employees and students to remotely access their school intranet at anytime from almost anywhere utilizing almost any type of access media at a considerably lower price than a 'do-it-yourself' solution. All the different access media are funneled through the Qwest infrastructure/backbone, removing the management concerns from the school.
Interactive Voice Response (IVR)
Here's a quick and cost effective way to deliver a wide variety of services, improve service to the student, and save money. IVR lets you streamline delivery of many key services. For example; you can operate outside of standard business hours, free staff members for more productive duties, and automate routine tasks like taking orders, making reservations and registering for classes.
Effective IVR based solutions now being explored by colleges and universities include: electronic surveys, tendering test results, completion of student aid forms, applications for admission, class registration, and general requests for information about campus activities. Students can provide and receive all pertinent information without ever leaving home.
Modem Aggregation Service (MAS)
MAS enables you to provide your users with modems located at your nearby Qwest central office. The service provides a dial-in number and a set number of modems your subscribers can use to gain dial-in access to your network and the Internet. Instead of owning or leasing dedicated modems, you can subscribe to a specified number of modems. Your modems are then dynamically allocated as your end users dial in. Modems are available in virtual blocks of 12.
You'll note a significant network benefit, because long duration remote access calls typical of Internet usage are offloaded from your voice network and are carried more efficiently on a separate frame relay or ATM cell relay network designed specifically for data traffic.

Distance Learning
With today's videoconferencing technology, students at multiple sites can be linked by multimedia connections with teachers and students at another location. Complete solutions are available for labs, classrooms and lecture halls. Using two-way interactive video, microphones, and pen-based electronic tablets, the students participate in classes where the teacher-even though many miles away-can see and interact with them.
Here are some ways that videoconferencing technology is being used in education:
Connecting adult students with night classes:
A rural school district, which launched a successful pilot project linking distant classes and students, is offering night classes across their videoconferencing network for adult working students who want to earn credits toward their high school diplomas. Adult students who work during the day don't have to commute to a distant campus many miles away. Instead, they visit a nearby school where night classes are conducted via videoconferencing technology.
Connecting students from multiple locations and cultures
In Somerville, Texas, junior high school students regularly connect to a classroom in Wyoming to exchange multimedia presentations on the two states' geography, geology and history. Educators, who attribute higher test scores to the videoconferencing network, are encouraged by the success of the distant learning project.
Connecting teachers to administrative meetings
Teachers at seven remote schools in rural Utah are attending administrative meetings and teacher education classes using videoconferencing equipment. Not only does the videoconferencing network save time and transportation costs, but the district gets more work accomplished by utilizing the multimedia capabilities of its network. Everybody in the school district wins-teachers save time, administrators cut costs, and taxpayers save money.
Connecting secondary schools to colleges and universities
High School students are enrolled in advanced curriculums and college credit courses via videoconferencing without leaving their communities. Videoconferencing technology makes it possible for them to connect to a number of colleges and universities around the country, where they can interact with their peers and instructors at other schools.
