Email is one of the most common ways for malicious software to infect your computer. There are a few simple steps you can take to make sure you are protected.
Avoid looking at spam. Attackers will use bulk spam emails to deliver harmful software to multiple people at one time. One good way to know if you have spam in your inbox or not, is if the email does not have your email address in the TO: or CC: field. If you do receive spam, simply delete it. Do not respond or reply back.
Be careful of phishing emails. It is a good practice to never give out any personal information through email. Many attackers will try to obtain your personal information such as your ssn number, credit card number, or passwords by sending you an email requesting this information. The attackers type the email in such a way that it appears to be a legitimate request from a business. Never give out any personal information through email, unless you can confirm the authenticity of the request.
Only open attachments that you are expecting and that are from a trusted source. If you receive an unwanted email you want to delete, make sure you delete it without opening it. Most Antivirus and Antispyware programs will help monitor your email use. While it is important that you keep your security software up to date, these security programs are not full-proof. When it comes to email security, there is no substitute for defensive emailing.
