Description
SLS is a platform-based, switched digital service offering fast, flexible, highly reliable and digitally clear connections with the simplicity of dialing a telephone. The service converts existing copper wires to two primary, high-speed (64Kbps) communication channels (B channels) that can be used, simultaneously or independently, to carry any combination of data, voice or video. Users can achieve a data transfer rate of up to 128 Kbps or faster by combining lines. SLS also provides a third channel, known as a D channel, for low-speed, packet-switched, data communications ideal for point-of-sale, remote monitoring or telemetry applications. The standard package includes a comprehensive 2B + D line and numerous voice and data features.

- – Call exclusion—restricts other users (that share a directory number) from bridging on to an active call or retrieving a held call.

When receiving an incoming call or fax, the second channel will accept the call while the first channel remains connected to the Internet. When the call/fax on the second channel is completed, the connection to the Internet automatically resumes its original speed of up to 128Kbps. As many as eight devices can share a single ISDN line.
- Versatility—With compatible equipment and SLS, ISDN can handle several types of information. The two versatile ISDN channels can replace multiple voice, fax and modem lines necessary to support data, voice, video and audio applications. Each device can be assigned its own telephone number, so incoming calls are routed directly to the appropriate device.
- Signal quality—SLS digital transport supports near-broadcast-quality video and CD-quality audio.
- Flexibility—No special handling is required when voice calls are made between ISDN-ready phones and conventional analog telephones. ISDN is provided over the public switched network, providing flexible service on a dial-up basis. ISDN is an excellent alternative to costly dedicated lines or multiple dial-up lines for voice, data, fax and Internet access.
How it works
ISDN is a digital network architecture providing both a voice connection and a high- or low-speed data connection simultaneously over existing telephone lines (i.e., twisted pair). SLS has a transmission rate of 144 Kbps divided into three channels. There are two B channels capable of 64 Kbps each and one D channel capable of 16 Kbps. Since the D channel is used for signaling, the B channels have a higher transmission rate than is currently available on a regular voice channel. Each B channel is capable of circuit-switched voice, circuit-switched data, or packet-switched data (individual case basis only). The D channel is capable of Q.931 or X.25 protocol signaling or X.25 packet-switched data.
