Qwest Private Line Solutions Digital Data Service
Always-on, dedicated circuits with maximum-security protection for your evolving communications network.
Qwest® Digital Data Service (DDS) provides a dedicated circuit—always on and always available. It is widely available and provides maximum security. Digital Data Service accommodates growth and flexibility of the communications network, while potentially reducing overall
expenses and controlling costs.
Description
Qwest Digital Data Service is a core Private Line solution with the capability of transmitting digital data over a dedicated point-to-point or multi-point circuit. Digital Data Service is available on an intrastate and interstate basis throughout the Qwest 14-state local service territory
(AZ, CO, IA, ID, MN, MT, NE, NM, ND, SD, UT, WA and WY). The available data rates are 2.4, 4.8, 9.6, 19.2, 56.0 and 64.0 Kilobits per second (Kbps). 64.0Kbps is available as a two-point circuit only.
Features
- Digital transmission—Digital Data Service uses only digital facilities to provide comprehensive digital transmission. This eliminates the need for expensive analog modems. Customer-provided channel service unit (CSU)/data service unit (DSU) is required.
- Regeneration of transmission—The signal is regenerated, not amplified, avoiding noise and distortion inherent to analog circuits.
- Built-in timing system—With digital transmission, various signals are generated at precise intervals. It is critical that data be read out at the receiving end of a circuit at the same average rate that it is written at the transmitting end. If not, information
can be lost or data sequences may become garbled.
- Low error rate—Designed to provide average performance exceeding 99.8 percent error-free seconds (EFS). Digital Data Service can connect with other Qwest digital services, including DS-1, DS-3, frame relay, packet-switching networks, simultaneous voice and data service
(SVDS), synchronous optical network (SONET), self-healing alternate route protection (SHARP) and self-healing network service (SHNS). DDS can interface with a packet-switching network, potentially reducing costs.
- Variable pricing discount plans are offered.
- Constant bandwidth capacity up and downstream.
- Installation service guarantee.
Optional Features of Digital Data Service
- Secondary Channel, available at 2.4 through 56Kbps data speeds, provides an independent lower-data-rate channel used to control or monitor your network.
- Subrated DS-0 Service provides DS-0-to-Subrate, also called DS-0A-to-DS-0B, multiplexing and transport of the subrate muxed channel.
- Transfer arrangement enables you to transfer a leg of your Qwest DDS circuit to another channel that terminates either at the same premise or in a different one. Limited to interstate service.
- Command-A-Link™ gives you network control of your DDS circuit(s) on a near real-time basis. Reconfiguration is done using intelligent network elements, such as Digital Cross-Connect Systems.
- Direct digital access line (DDAL) provides a 56Kbps access channel with the added capability of carrying signaling for a public switched digital services circuit. The line may also be used with a private switched digital network.

How Digital Data Service works
DDS provides full duplex, four-wire transmission of synchronous serial data between two end users or between an end user and another carrier. Qwest provides timing for this service through facilities to the end user on the received bit stream. DDS is only
available between locations that can be connected through compatible digital facilities.
